Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Town Pump and Water Trough is a 19th century hand operated water-pump painted black with a red granite water trough. It is located in front of St. George Post Office at the juncture of Portage Street and Main Street.

Heritage Value

Town Pump and Water Trough is designated a Local Historic Place for its impact on the development of the Town.

Deep artesian wells provided fresh water for citizens, travelers and animals for more than 150 years. It was a public gathering place and a landmark for the traffic flow in the downtown of St. George. The location marks the crest of the portage which runs from North Street, having fresh water, to South Street having salt water, and the commercial center of the Town.
