Description du lieu patrimonial

This cemetery is located on the south side of Route 224 in the rural community of Ebenezer in Queens County. The site has seven gravestones with several trees and shrubs and is surrounded by agricultural land. A small square sign indicates the name of the cemetery.

Valeur patrimoniale

The Glasgow Road cemetery is valued for its historical association with the early Scottish pioneers to this southern area of Lot 24.

Many of the families who settled Lot 24 were Acadians, but in this southern portion of the Lot, Scottish families began settling in the 1830s. Most of the people interred in this cemetery were Presbyterians, although a few Methodist families were also interred on the site.

By 1855, the name of the community was referred to as Ebenezer, which has been suggested by one source as coming from 1 Samuel 12 in the Bible. It translates from Hebrew as "stone of help" and can be seen to refer to those things which remind us of God's love, presence, or assistance.

The earliest interment in the cemetery was John McInnis (1790-1853). His wife, Margaret (1802-1882) was also later interred here. The 1861 Census notes three John McInnis households in the area and two of these had been born in Scotland. Meacham's 1880 Atlas shows the cemetery near the road in a corner of Malcolm McInnis' property. He was interred here in 1919. Other surnames associated with the site include: Stewart, Campbell, and MacCallum.

Today, the cemetery is well maintained by the local branch of the Women's Institute.
