Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Wood End North West Mounted Police (NWMP) Post is a Municipal Heritage Property consisting of one city lot at 118-4th Street in Estevan. The property features a two-storey, wood building constructed in 1883 that has been moved from its original location.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Wood End NWMP Post lies in its status as the oldest NWMP post remaining in Saskatchewan. The post was constructed in 1883 when the NWMP arrived in southeast Saskatchewan. Its original location, also used by the Dominion government’s International Boundary Commission from 1873 to 1874, was given its name because of the lack of firewood that existed west of the post. Wood End NWMP Post served as one of a series of outposts located along the United States/Canada border until it was closed in 1897.

The heritage value of the Wood End NWMP Post also lies in its architecture. Of wood construction, the building displays the Georgian Revival architectural style commonly employed in Territorial government buildings of its era.
